Euzhan Collins, a vibrant and talented visual artist whose murals and paintings brightened the streets of downtown Phoenix and beyond, passed away suddenly on May 5, 2025, at the age of 42. His unexpected death has left the local arts community and his many admirers across Arizona in shock.
Born on August 14, 1982, in Phoenix, Mr. Collins discovered his passion for art at a young age. He attended Central High School, where he first experimented with graffiti art under the guidance of his art teacher, Maria Sanchez. After graduating in 2000, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University in 2004, specializing in mixed media and large-scale installations.
Upon completing his studies, Collins quickly became known for his bold use of color and striking geometric patterns. His signature style—fusing abstract forms with local desert motifs—earned him commissions from the City of Phoenix, where he completed more than a dozen public art projects. Among his most celebrated works is the “Sonoran Sunrise” mural on Roosevelt Street, a sweeping panorama that captures the luminosity of the desert dawn.
In addition to public installations, Collins held solo exhibitions at the Phoenix Art Museum and at galleries across the Valley. His 2018 show, “Desert Dreams,” showcased a series of dreamlike canvases that explored themes of memory, transformation, and the interplay between nature and urban life. Critics praised his ability to evoke emotion through texture and contrast, securing his reputation as one of Arizona’s most innovative contemporary artists.
Friends and colleagues remember Collins as generous and deeply committed to nurturing emerging talent. He volunteered regularly at local schools and led community mural workshops, mentoring aspiring artists and fostering collaboration. “Euzhan believed art could connect people and transform neighborhoods,” recalled fellow artist Darnell Jackson. “His passion was contagious, and his legacy will live on in every wall he painted.”
Mr. Collins is survived by his parents, Lorraine and James Collins; his sister, Mariah Collins; and his partner, Rafael Ortega. He will be dearly missed by a wide circle of family, friends, and fellow artists.
Visitation will be held on May 11, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home, 1234 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix. A memorial service will follow on May 12 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 5510 N. Central Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Phoenix Community Arts Foundation to support public art initiatives and youth workshops.
